Characteristics of products or services

Benefits Offers
A lot of adverts that show benefits offered normally don't have a lot to do with the actual product. These adverts like to sell the ideal, basically saying if you buy this product your life will be like this.
For example a freedom advert sells that if you buy the product you are in control of your life and will end up with whatever you want.It makes you think about what the product can give you.

Advantages over similar products
These adverts show direct comparison to a product that is similar to what they are trying to sell. These adverts are all based on fact and witch means they can not lie, they always tell the truth. However, because of this they do manipulate what is on screen. For example in an ASDA advert it tells us that it is the cheapest supermarket even tho they are only doing the comparison on the products the are cheeper then the other stores and not on an average of every product. The adverts try and show how their product is better then any other product.

UPS - Unique Selling Point
It shows off what makes the product special, it shows off that nobody else has it. They use this as the main focus of their advert to make it stand out. In the advert they make the audience feel that they need it. They try and make the audience that with the product it can change their life for the better. For example when apple first released "Siri" they made it the focus of their advert and made it look like it will be helpful in their day to day life.

Life style appeal
For this they used targeted advertising. For example they would advertise kids toys during the children's programmes not during EastEnders. They again also try selling the ideal to the audience trying to make them think that if you buy this product your life will be better.

Brand identity
This means that the brand is easily identifiable. Companies use many different ways in which they make the company easily identified. For example We buy any car uses a well known soundtrack that is easily memorable. Other adverts use already popular brands and put them into their advert to make them memorable and make them stand out with their own identity. An example of that is the volts wagon advert that uses the well known franchise Starwars. They do this so they can tie into pop culture and make sure their brand is known for the advert.
